My trip to stunning Ischia

This week I had the privilege of attending The Personal Travel Agents, top performers trip in the stunning setting of Ischia. The trip was hosted by luxury specialist Kuoni, and I had the pleasure of exploring around not only the beautiful island of Ischia but also Naples, Sorrento and Pompeii as well. Focus on: Ischia and Capri

Capri and Ischia are tiny islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, just across from the Amalfi Coast, in the Gulf of Naples.

There are the exclusive shopping streets of Via Camerelle in Capri and Corso Vittoria Colonna in Ischia and then the Roman ruins of Villa Jovis and medieval remnants of Castello Arogonese. Dress up to the nines and congregate with the locals at vibrant piazzettas, or slink off for drinks under a seductive sunset. Sweat it out at bubbling hot springs, putter along to secret coves or hike inland towards Ischia’s white lava and wildflower fields where you’ll come across the tiny village of Serrara Fontana and the most amazing coniglio on the island. 

Tell us you want the best spot for a romantic dinner under a canopy of lemon groves and we’ll send you to one of Capri’s most exclusive restaurants. Ask us about the thermal baths in Ischia and we’ll introduce you to Negombo’s natural pools. Or if you’re looking for those picture postcard views we’ll put you on a chairlift ride from Anacapri up to Monte Solaro.

The hotel: Grand Hotel Excelsior Terme

Ideally located near the island’s main port, this classic hotel – once a nobleman’s residence – offers a peaceful retreat close to the town centre. Surrounded by pine trees, shrubs and flower-filled Mediterranean gardens, the hotel has a relaxed ambience with plenty of space to unwind. Enjoy fresh fruit and cocktails by the pool, settle into one of the freestanding garden hammocks with a good book, or follow the path through the gardens and cross a side road to the hotel’s small private beach to swim in the clear waters. The Roman-style thermal spa showcases the island’s healing waters and therapeutic treatments. The Belvedere restaurant serves traditional Mediterranean cuisine with fresh fish and vegetables from the hotel’s garden and in keeping with the hotel’s wellbeing focus there is an emphasis on flavoursome healthy dishes that use low-fat ingredients. You can also enjoy a taste of the local cuisine down on the beach bar, stay refuelled with some snacks and drinks by the pool or venture out of the hotel to discover a number of restaurants just a stroll away. Wind down in the evening with some live music and cocktails at the piano bar. 

The Standard Double Rooms with Balcony are cosy and overlook the gardens. It’s worth upgrading to a Superior Seaview Room or a Junior Suite Seaview with Balcony on one of the upper floors for extra space and sea views.
