Celebrate Canada is an eleven-day celebration that takes place from June 21 to July 1 and including National Aboriginal Day, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, Canadian Multiculturalism Day, and Canada Day. Each day is an opportunity to celebrate our cultural diversity, rich heritage, and history by holding events in communities across Canada.
Canada History Week, started in 2013, Canada History Week is an opportunity for all Canadians from coast to coast to coast to learn about the people and events that have shaped our great nation on the local and national level. Canada has a rich history, and our Government is proud to create opportunities for Canadians to learn about it.
Other important dates include Commonwealth Day, a day to observe the common bonds and the contribution of the Commonwealth of Nations to the creation of a harmonious global environment; Victoria Day, which celebrates the Sovereign's birthday in Canada since the reign of Queen Victoria; and the Anniversary of the Statute of Westminster, which marks a truly significant milestone in our evolution as an independent nation.
February 15 was declared National Flag of Canada Day in 1996 and marks the day in 1965 when our red and white maple leaf flag was first raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa and hundreds of communities across Canada. It is the perfect opportunity to learn about the history of the flag. Plan in-class and in-school events around National Flag of Canada Day using our Teachers’ Corner materials.
Sir John A. Macdonald Day is held every year on January 11. Sir John A. Macdonald Day was established as an Act in March 2002 and celebrates Canada’s first Prime Minister and one of the architects of Confederation.
