New York City, also known as The Big Apple, The City That Never Sleeps and The Five Boroughs, is a place that needs to be seen to be believed. It is made up of 5 boroughs, Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island, and is rich with culture amongst the hustle and bustle of the big city. Manhattan is surrounded by the East, Hudson and Harlem rivers, and is said to be one of the largest economic regions in the world, with the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ being based within the financial district. It is also the most popular borough for tourism, featuring Times Square, Central Park, Grand Central Terminal and the Broadway Theatre District. Times Square is by far the busiest tourist attraction in Manhattan, attracting millions of visitors per year to see the brightly lit billboards, and visit the numerous theatres nearby. If you want to view the lights without fighting through the crowds, try enjoying a cocktail above it all. The R Lounge in the Renaissance Hotel offers stunning views in comfort and without all of the big city noise. Central Park is full of activities, including its own zoo, art installations such as the Alice in Wonderland statue, and numerous gardens. It is easy to lose yourself in this magnificent park surrounded by the city. Full of holiday lights, jaw dropping window displays and outstanding Christmas decorations New York is definitely a place to be at Christmas. With so many attractions to see over the festive period, here is my top 5 not miss out on.

Insider tip

For a bit of magic, try visiting the Whispering Galleries in Grand Central Station. Known to be a quite romantic spot and popular for marriage proposals, if you stand at opposite corners of the station concourse and whisper towards the wall, the sound travels through the ceiling to the person at the other side where they can hear it clear as day.

Events and festivals

US Open at Flushing Fields Park in Queens, late August. Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade through New York City at the end of November. Times Square New Year’s Eve Celebrations.

If you just want to see it from a distance you can take advantage of the free Staten Island Ferry, or if you fancy splashing out you can take a private helicopter ride past Lady Liberty herself. Shopping is a popular pastime for visitors to New York, with Bloomingdales and Macy’s offering a lot of your shopping needs. If sports are more your thing, you are spoiled for choice with the Yankee Stadium, Madison Square Garden and the MetLife Stadium.
