Out of all the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria has always been one of my most requested holiday destinations for families, and it’s easy to see why! With it’s all year-round sun, fantastic water parks, endless beaches and family attractions, it can turn out to be a great holiday for both the summer holidays and winter half terms

1: The Beautiful Beaches

Gran Canaria is a couples’ & family beach paradise, primely located in a sun-soaked region of the Atlantic Ocean. Year-round warmth means that daily temperatures average out at 24° C and 340 days of sunshine are enjoyed each year.

Just four hours away by plane and with excellent connections to 27 airports across the United Kingdom, Gran Canaria is extremely accessible and has a wealth of attractions to keep visitors happy. From beautiful beaches to luxury resorts and hotels, this Canary Island is perfect for your next couples’ retreat.

The Maspalomas-Meloneras area on the southernmost point of Gran Canaria is one of the most sophisticated and chic areas in Europe.

With its thousand-year palm grove, natural lagoon, beautiful white sandy beach and famous dunes, Maspalomas is placed within a nature protected area. Meloneras, on the other hand, has a wonderful, long oceanfront promenade with bars, restaurants, boutique shopping and a casino. Visitors have a choice of two beaches located on both edges of the promenade – the stunning Maspalomas dunes and beach, and the smaller Meloneras beach.

Anfi is known for its great micro-climate and Caribbean-style white sandy beach. The opulent Maroa Beach Club located on Anfi Island by the marina is a great way to enjoy a sunny afternoon

2. 7 Days, 7 Parks - Jam Packed Activity

Monday: Acuario Poema del Mar, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Get up close and personal with the weird and wonderful creatures of the Atlantic at Sanapú Dock’s amazing aquarium. Fun for  all the family as this would suit everyone aged four and older.

Tuesday: Angry Birds Activity Park, Puerto Rico

Have fun with Red, Chuck, Bomb, and other feathered friends at this miniature version of Bird Island. The perfect day out for those aged three to thirteen.

Wednesday: Aqualand Maspalomas, Maspalomas

You don’t have to be at the beach to have a wet and wild time on Gran Canaria. The inland Aqualand water park is the venue to make a splash at on the island with fast and furious rides for those in need of an adrenaline fix.

Thursday: Hangar 37, Tarajalillo

Call of Duty fan? Step inside the game at this airsoft battlefield which is 10,000 square metres of warzone.

Friday: Holiday World Maspalomas, Maspalomas

Scream if you want to go faster on rides which include The Little Octopus, a Formula One simulator, and real-life ponies. All the fun of the fair and more.

Saturday: Palmitos Park Maspalomas, Maspalomas

The sister of nearby Aqualand, save money on a trip to both by investing in a two-park ticket. There are plenty of birds to see here including birds of prey and parrots, along with fish, dolphins, and reptiles.

Sunday: Sioux City Park, Cañon del Aguila

The appropriately-named Eagle Canyon houses a Gran Canaria theme park dedicated to the Wild West of the US. Visit day or night for shoot-em-ups and singalongs with the cabaret  singers.

3: The Amazing Family Hotels

Whether you’ve been out at the beach, making the most of your destination, there’s nothing more important on your family holiday than having the perfect hotel to come back to. Luckily Gran Canaria is full of family-friendly hotels, including the best kids’ clubs, children’s pools, babysitting services and activities for older teens.

Gran Canaria is always top of the list so it’s always best to book early to get the best rooms and accommodation. The good news is that there’s a variety for you to choose from depending on what you prefer as a family, whether that’s an all-inclusive hotel stay, on site bungalow or self-catering apartments.

One thing for sure is that many of my personal recommended hotels will come with,

-          Comfortable rooms with baby facilities & cots

-          Heated kid’s pools

-          Fantastic splash parks

-          Lots of food options for little fussy eaters

-          Great onsite entertainment

4: A Place For City Breakers

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the biggest city in the Canary Islands and is Gran Canaria’s capital. It is fantastic for a city beach escape with the golden sands of Las Canteras and its lovely promenade with all bars, restaurants, hotels and apartments located nearby.

The old quarter is the city’s most beautiful area with cobbled streets, pretty corners and a variety of styles ranging from late Gothic to Renaissance. If you’re interested in culture, then this part of town is dotted with Gran Canarian landmarks including Casa de Colon mansion, Museo Canario museum and the Santa Ana Cathedral

5. The Gastonomy For Foodie Lovers

Gran Canaria offers sophisticated, delightful gastronomy with dishes based on traditional recipes and locally-sourced, natural ingredients with modern twists to awaken the senses.

The tantalising taste adventure that Gran Canaria serves up is embodied by its range of markets, featuring fresh food and restaurants converted from traditional stalls, as well as local delicacies such as honey rum and salted fish. The island has also recently joined the Saborea España association, giving several talented, young chefs the opportunity to put their personal, arty touch on traditional cuisine.
