Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields. Massive glaciers are protected in Vatnajökull and Snæfellsjökull national parks. Most of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavik, which runs on geothermal power and is home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history.

Events and festivals

In February or March, there is an annual event in which you can actually enjoy your meals: the Food and Fun Festival. Many of the world's greatest chefs come to Iceland to collaborate with Reykjavík's finest restaurants―and together create ingenious dishes to the delight of the taste-buds of those attending.

Each chef is assigned to one of the participating establishments, where they prepare a menu that is crafted from Icelandic ingredients and products, and inspired by their own international experience.

From May 18th to June 3rd, Iceland's capital hosts the Reykjavík Art Festival. First held in 1970, it celebrates music, visual arts, dance, literature, design and more, with a special focus on innovation.

On June 21st, the summer solstice occurs, where Icelanders and visitors alike gather to celebrate the year's longest day, as in the pagan tradition. In Iceland, this is particularly special due to the fact that the sun never sets.

Popular things to do and see and unmissable experiences

A visit to Snaefellsnes is truly magical. Visit Kirkjufell, widely considered one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland due to its iconic feature in the Game of Thrones TV series.

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa and perhaps the country’s most visited geothermal spa. The water here is an opaque, milky blue, unlike anything found elsewhere on earth.  The hot pool is rich in minerals and thriving with good bacteria. Silica masks are available for all guests, too. Both the water and masks have granted the lagoon a reputation for healing. The Blue Lagoon sits within incredible nature. It is located on the volcanic Reykjanes Peninsula, known for its stark and haunting landscapes.  The lagoon is conveniently located just ten minutes from Keflavík International Airport and thirty minutes from Reykjavik city centre, making it the perfect place to start or end a holiday. There are a range of airport transfers to choose from, many of which will stop at The Blue Lagoon. Please note that the Blue Lagoon is a top-rated attraction in Iceland and you must, therefore, book your admission ticket in advance.

Over twenty species of whale, dolphin and porpoise can be found in Iceland’s waters, making it a top destination for whale-watching. While boat tours head out from ports such as Reykjavík and Akureyri, in places such as the Westfjords you can catch sight of whales from shore. The most successful tours usually set out from the small northern town of Húsavík. Often nicknamed the whale watching capital of Europe, Húsavik sits by Skjálfandi Bay, which teems with aquatic life throughout the summer. Spot harbour porpoises, white-beaked dolphins and humpback whales almost every day.

Climate

The average temperature of the warmest month, July, exceeds 10°C in the lowlands of southern and western Iceland, but is below that in other parts of the country. This makes the larger part of Iceland belonging to the arctic climate zone. The warme
