Britain has long had a close relationship with Malta. It was a British Colony for a time in the 19th and early 20th Century and they still drive on the left and speak English everywhere. There are three main Islands – Malta, Gozo, and Comino and the Capital Valletta - built by the Knights of St John – has recently been discovered as a top City Break destination – its magnificent harbour being a highlight. It is the European Capital of Culture in 2018 and much improvement work is taking place.

Try and find Café Cordina – the oldest café in Valletta and worth a visit for the beautiful ceiling alone http://www.caffecordina.com/ 244, Republic Street Sliema is a great base if you want to get out and about – we recommend the boat trips from here to Valletta or have a ride on one of the old buses. The Palace hotel here is one of our favourites – it has a lovely rooftop pool and the popular Temptasian Restaurant on the same floor (Tel. +356 2252 3409) and is perfect for a special weekend or week away. If you like Villa holidays – or Agro tourism - then head over to the island of Gozo. It’s a 20 minute ferry ride – smaller and greener than Malta itself – and it’s an idyllic haven for those seeking total relaxation. There are a few luxury hotels here such as the Ta' Cenc or the Kempinsky but most people choose a Villa or Farmhouse accommodation to really connect with this unique island.

Insider tip

For a slightly different day out head to Popeye Village – this was the set for the 1980 Musical Film starring Robin Williams and now offers boat rides & food outlets – it’s a bit wacky and surreal and makes for a fun few hours (Address: Triq Tal-Prajjet, Il-Mellie?a Phone:+356 2152 4782)

Events and festivals

Mosta’s festival in honour of St. Mary or the Assumption of Our Lady is celebrated annually on the 15th of August.

Popular things to do and see and unmissable experiences

Mdina are an old city inland in Malta with fabulous views over the rest of the Island. The narrow walled streets are especially atmospheric after dark and the City is dominated by the many Churches. If Churches are your thing then don’t miss the Rotunda of Mosta Dome (Rotunda Square, Mosta) During the Second World War the church was almost destroyed when, during an air raid, a 200kg bomb fell through the dome without exploding. All the 300 people attending morning mass were left unharmed.
