Amsterdam is the capital and the largest city of The Netherlands. Its name is derived from Amstel dam: a dam on the river Amstel. The network of canals gives the city its charm and the title of "Venice of the North”. The city's canal belt comprises of four canals-the innermost - Singel - is the oldest. It has Europe's finest museums and art galleries. The Historical Museum explores Amsterdam's development from a small medieval settlement along the river into a thriving modern city. The museum's galleries showcase the progress of each century, with particular emphasis given to the Golden Age. The Dutch Resistance Museum displays false documents, weaponry and other equipment used during World War II. The Royal Palace was the official residence of the Dutch Royal Family and the present Queen. It is now used for functions as the family resides in The Hague. Take a stroll around the notorious Red Light District though the atmosphere is hectic with tourists jostling for space next to city slickers, pimps and drug dealers. The district's architecture is scenic and it dates back to the middle ages. Visitors can go sightseeing on bicycles; Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world. It is the centre of bicycle culture, there are bike paths and bike racks throughout the city and in the city centre driving a car is discouraged.
