France and England fought to reign over the for nearly 200 years. While British customs and traditions prevail, there is a decidedly French influence that permeates this paradise-in the local accent and refined cuisine. But it's the love of romance that is most remarkable. It's found in the fiery passions of its ancient volcano, the serene abundance of its rainforest and the rhapsodic charm of Marigot Bay. Even the twin peaks of Les Pitons, the island's iconic landmark, pair off as beautifully as two people in love.

St Lucia is a sub-tropical Island known for its unique sheer-sided mountains – or “Pitons” Volcanic beaches, reef diving sites, and its Rainforest interior

The Capital Castries is a bustling town with a popular market and some great shopping.  If you find yourself here, make sure you pop into the Cathedral to see the murals painted by a local artist.

An easy trip from Castries is Rodney Bay, arguably the most upmarket part of the Island. Here there are luxury hotels and great (though expensive) restaurants and a picture postcard beach – Grab a Mimosa and sink your toes into the powdery soft sand and you really can forget all about the 9 to 5 back home. Bliss

If you are looking for something off the beaten track, then head to Anse La Voutte Beach on the Rugged East Coast – you’ll need a 4x4 to get there (speak to your Personal Travel Agent about hiring one before you go) or you can get there on foot – though you may need a guide – but this secluded spot really is worth the effort.

Insider tip

Pigeon island – it’s not an Island nowadays as they have built a causeway. It’s a National Park of about 44 acres with a few Historical Forts and some wonderful Hiking Trails.  The views are great from either of its two peaks as all trees were cut down when it was used as a lookout for Pirates. Pigeon Point is just 7 minutes’ walk from Sandals Grande St Lucian Spa & Beach Resort

Events and festivals

St Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival. (Early May) This Festival is known worldwide for its Jazz and for the International stars it attracts. Nowadays R&B and Calypso music also feature heavily and entertainment channel “E!” recently listed it as one of the Top 5 Festivals in the World. Events take place all over the Island with the Main Stage being at Pigeon Point National Park.
